Pultruded vs. Molded FRP Grating: Which One Should You Choose?

Published: July 2025 | Product Guide | Author: Preet Technical Team

1. What Is Pultruded FRP Grating?

Pultruded FRP grating is made by pulling continuous fiberglass strands through a resin bath and heated die. This creates a strong, linear structure with high unidirectional strength.

It's ideal for applications requiring long spans, high load capacity, and directional strength-like industrial platforms, walkways, and catwalks.

2. What Is Molded FRP Grating?

Molded FRP grating is manufactured by placing chopped fiberglass strands into a mold and saturating them with resin. It forms a mesh-like panel with equal strength in both directions (bi-directional).

Molded grating is often used in floor drains, trench covers, or corrosive environments where maximum open area and chemical resistance are needed.

3. Key Differences Between Pultruded and Molded FRP Grating

Feature Pultruded Grating Molded Grating
Manufacturing Process Pultrusion (continuous strands) Molding (chopped strand)
Load Capacity High (directional) Moderate (equal in all directions)
Span Capability Long spans possible Limited span
Slip Resistance Gritted surface available Typically molded-in grit
Cost Higher (per strength) Lower
Ideal Use Walkways, platforms, catwalks Drains, trench covers, corrosion zones

4. Which Type Should You Use?

Use pultruded grating when your project requires:

  • ✔ Long unsupported spans
  • ✔ Heavy equipment traffic
  • ✔ Directional load support
Use molded grating when you need:
  • ✔ High corrosion resistance
  • ✔ Lower cost for non-structural use
  • ✔ Drainage applications
